Chilly Chicken(Indo Chinese style)

‘Chilly chicken’ is a dish available in most Chinese restaurants in India, which you hardly ever find in Chinese restaurants here. This dish comes from the unique ‘Indo Chinese’ cuisine in India. It’s the influence of Indian cuisine on Chinese cuisine, resulting in the best of both worlds experience. This type of food is supposed to have originated in the North east regions of India, which borders with Tibet and China, and has spread throughout the country, resulting in morphed versions of the original cuisine, but delicious nonetheless.

One of my brother’s favorite combinations is to order Chinese fried rice with chilly chicken. I made this for him when he was visiting and it came out really well. The good thing about making these fast food types of dishes at home is that you control the quality and make it as healthy as it can get. 🙂

Here is the recipe for a delightful appetizer that can please a crowd.
Fried chicken:

2-3 chicken breasts, cubed
1 large egg white beaten
1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
1 tsp sriracha sauce
1 tsp red chilly powder
1 tsp soy sauce
1 tbsp corn flour
1 tbsp all purpose flour
Salt, to taste
Red food coloring, if desired
Oil to deep fry

2 tbsp oil
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1/2 tsp red chilly flakes
3 green chillies, slit
1 small onion, cubed
1 green bell pepper, cubed
1 tsp soy sauce
salt, a pinch
Scallions, to garnish

Wash and pat the chicken breasts and cube it. Place the egg whites, ginger garlic paste, sriracha sauce, red chilly powder, soy sauce in a bowl and whip to combine. Let this marinate for about 30 minutes. Heat oil for deep frying the chicken. Just before frying, add the all purpose flour and corn flour and coat the marinated chicken. Keep the heat medium and drop the chicken few piece at a time. Fry till golden brown. Take care not to crowd the pan, you will need the chicken to be crispy on the outside, but still cooked through on the inside. Set the fried chicken aside.

Heat the 2 tbsp oil in a pan. Add the finely chopped garlic, red chilly flakes and slit green chillies. Let this sizzle for a few seconds. Add the cubed onion and green bell pepper. Saute, until cooked but still crunchy. Add in the fried chicken and toss to combine. Add the soy sauce and a pinch of salt. Mix to combine. Garnish with scallions and serve hot!

Verdict: Crunchy, salty and spicy – this is a perfect appetizer/snack. Although spicy, it is loved by kids and adults alike. A popular dish made healthy and tasty at home – was a satisfaction. 🙂
