Farmers Market Find: Wild Spinach Stir Fry (AraiKeerai Poriyal)

I went to the farmers market this week, and again I picked up greens…This time I went when it was almost pack-up time. As I hurried in, I saw a young guy slowly packing up these greens in a box. They still were very fresh. I remembered that these were Indian greens and I asked him, what are these greens? And he replied ‘Wild Spinach’. I forget the tamil name for these. My guess is ‘araikeerai’. If someone knows, please leave a comment. I told him these were Indian greens and he was surprised. He said that a lot of Chinese people buy these greens and use them in stir fry. I thanked him for the tip and the good price he offered me. These were $1.50 each. But if I bought two bunches, he said he’d give it to me for even less. I didn’t know what to do with two large bunches and I just got one. I made a quick keerai poriyal with the fresh greens that tasted really good.

1 large bunch wild spinach or any other keerai
1 onion chopped
1 tbsp oil
1/2 tsp mustard
1/2 tsp urad dal
1 tsp channa dal
4 dried red chillies broken
a sprig of curry leaves
1/4 cup grated coconut
salt to taste

Wash and chop the wild spinach, including stems. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat, add the mustard, when it splutters add urad dal and channa dal. Wait until the dals turn golden brown. Add the red chillies and curry leaves. Add the onion and saute until soft. Add the chopped spinach and saute until all the water evaporates and the spinach wilts. Wait to salt the spinach until after it shrinks. Top with the grated coconut.

Verdict: Sweet and buttery…yeah…this keerai has a buttery taste to it when stir fried. Topped with the coconut, it was delicious.
